The Blackout Empty The Blackout

Post by Captain Jack Tue Jan 17, 2012 1:18 pm

All day tomorrow www.ffreverie.net will join thousands of websites in the blacking out of the internet.

FFreverie is joining Reddit, Wikipedia and much of the internet tomorrow in an act of self-censorship to protest two dangerous bills making their way through Congress, SOPA and PIPA.

Both the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act would break the internet. This is not hyperbole. Both acts would empower lawmakers to block access to any website they deem to be hosting “infringing links.” Because the U.S. essentially creates internet law precedent, other countries across the world would follow suit.

Websites like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and yes, ffreverie could be killed with the flick of a lawmaker’s switch, due process be damned. This is obviously problematic for many reasons, not the least of which is the slippery slope argument.

If we allow the government to determine which websites are suitable, what is to stop a change in government from having a change in what is considered suitable?

It is absolutely critical that you take a moment to contact your elected representatives to voice your concern about PIPA and SOPA. Let them know in no uncertain terms that you do not support these bills in any form, and that you wish for your representatives to vote against these and all future iterations of the bills. You can do this in mere seconds at http://americancensorship.org/
